The Mark V action remained relatively unchanged during the first five years of its production, until manufacturing moved from PFI in the United States to J. Manufacturing of the Mark V was moved back to the United States in 1995, where the Mark V has been built under contract by both Saco Defense (acquired by General Dynamics in 1998) and Acrometal/ATEK ever since. Some say the machining and finishing of the Howa manufactured Mark Vs was an improvement over that of the quality of the Sauer made guns. Manufacturing of the Mark V continued in West Germany until the early 1970s when material and labour costs led Weatherby to shift production to Howa in Japan. The demand for the new Mark V rifles quickly exceeded Weatherby's manufacturing capacity, so the company contracted with J. and the rifles were assembled and finished at the Weatherby facility in South Gate. In 1958, after several years of development, Roy Weatherby introduced the Mark V bolt action, his first proprietary design developed totally in-house by Weatherby himself and with his head engineer, Fred Jennie. This action was very stout and had several features that would be integrated into Weatherby's future proprietary rifle designs, including a low bolt-lift and triple gas-escape ports in the bolt. Weatherby's first break from designs based on Mauser actions came in 1956 when he commissioned the Danish firm of Schultz & Larsen to build the 378 Weatherby Magnums utilizing the Schultz & Larsen Model 54 bolt-action. Some custom rifles were still produced in South Gate following this contract. Weatherby manufactured his rifles for many years at his small facility located in South Gate, California, until 1956 when he contracted with Sako to continue building his firearms that were based on the Weatherby-FN Mauser actions. Weatherby would build a custom rifle from a customer's specifications for bespoke rifles, using any action the customer requested - provided the action was strong enough to tolerate the pressures for their desired cartridge. I went back and bought one for myself the next day because I thought it felt nicer than my Browning and would make a great upland gun for me.The original production rifles by Roy Weatherby were built on commercial Mauser actions manufactured by FN, Brevex (magnum), and Mathieu (left hand). Bottom line, my brother bought the Orion and is very happy with it. The salesman tried to tell him the original one would be a better hunting gun because it was lighter but I pointed out that it had an aluminum receiver, didn’t shoulder well, and would hammer the shoulder over a couple rounds of target clays. I took the brand he was interested in from him and handed him the Orion and told him to give it a feel. I picked it up and found it had great balance, mounted nicely, was quick pointing and looked fantastic.
We got to the store and were looking at the one he was interested in when I noticed the Weatherby Orion sitting next to the one he was planning to buy. His wife suggested to him that he take me with him since I had been involved in shooting and firearms training training for many years. He researched economy grade O/Us and had picked out a brand that he was going to buy. his semi-auto but didn’t want to spend what I paid for my Browning. He’d shot my Browning a couple of times and liked the feel of the O/U vs. My brother was looking for an over under to shoot recreational sporting clays with me and to take hunting pheasants.
